Schooling or rather, not

I have to post about the Pioneer farm and retreat but I am waiting to get my camera cord back from my mom so I can post more pics. I'll get there.

In the mean time, I was thinking about school today. We were having a discussion on one of my support groups about the term "unschooling". I have always identified with the idea of unschooling. I even use that term sometimes when discussing our schooling.

First, a definition of unschooling. It isn't actually too easy to define. In the most extreme ways of unschooling-most commonly used by secular homeschoolers-children are never told what they must learn. They basically follow their interests. Here is a website that I found that has a good explanation of unschooling. http://www.unschooling.com/library/faq/index.shtml Here is their definition:

Have you ever described 'red' to a person who is color blind? Sometimes, trying
to define unschooling is like trying to define red. Ask 30 unschoolers to define
the word and you'll get thirty shades of red. They'll all be red, but they'll
all be different. Generally, unschoolers are concerned with learning or becoming
educated, not with 'doing school.' The focus is upon the choices made by each
individual learner, and those choices can vary according to learning style and
personality type. There is no one way to unschool.

You can run across those who unschool who also "unparent" but I have never believed that is correct. For one thing, it denies our sinful nature.

My friend Carrie said that Gregg Harris used the term "Delight Directed Studies". I have decided to go with that term. (If I can remember it. I've already had to look it up.LOL) It does more accurately convey the kind of schooling we do in this house.

What does this mean to us? Well, we do have a few "textbooks" (and now even a teacher's manual which I try to avoid but it came with the package LOL) that we use occasionally. We started reading The Mystery of History a couple of years ago. We got to the part about Egyptians and stopped the text and studied the Egyptians. We got books from the library and did fun projects (like writing hyroglyphics on paper bags taped to the wall in the hallway.) We spent at least a month on this until the kids showed they were ready to move on. We didn't get much further in our textbook though because we started reading the Little House series. That of course, led us to studying about pioneers for quite awhile. We haven't gotten back to The Mystery of History since. I ended up ordering Diana Waring's History Alive! Ancient Civilizations and The Bible full curriculum (she had a special so I basically got the books for free). I ordered it for the CD's. History on CD to listen to in the car. We just started listening today and so far, the kids are enjoying it. They love listening to things in the car.

At one point, Nathan became interested in Knight and Castles. I don't even remember what sparked the interest-probably a book we read. That was at least a year ago and he still loves learning about them. He knows more than I do. I allow him to study at his level. I introduce projects I think he might like but he usually takes them over and makes them his own.

Right now, Alex is into anything pets, especially dogs. She got books from the library and reads them. Often she will say, "Mom, did you know..." followed by some dog fact.

I do require my kids to "learn" some things they may not want to. These are things that are needed in day to day life, like being able to read, write and do basic math. But I don't care if they learn them in the way and time frame the public school world does. My goal is only that they improve a bit every year. We do have a couple of workbooks we use from time to time but we don't sit down with them everyday.

We do not use any math curriculum at this time. Nathan is weak on his times tables-he knows how to do them but doesn't have them memorized. We have used flash cards but I find that just having him help me with things that require math helps him learn much faster. Alex is on target for her age.

Where is all this going? I was thinking recently about my school experience. I was a good student. I received two C's in college-one in algebra and one in a required political science class. (I just don't understand polysci well.) I was great at memorizing things long enough to take the tests. I probably only read a couple of textbooks in high school and college. It was easy for me to listen to the lectures, take notes and study those notes for the test. I always did my homework-usually busy work. But I forgot a lot of it. Why? I believe it was because I didn't really care about what I was "learning". I wasn't doing it for me; I was doing it for my parents and teachers. I did it because it was expected.

I watch my children learn. They find an interest and immerse themselves in that topic. They read about it, write stories about it, act out plays and do projects. They are enjoying it. Now, at their age, I realize they may not retain everything they are learning, but our goal is to love God first and I hope they learn to be able to learn things when they need to. They need to know how to learn. This may mean having a teacher to teach them, or take a class or read a book or even sometimes, just start trying something. (Ever see a guy try to put a piece of furniture together without the directions? They learn. LOL)

My prayer is that my children will follow what God has for them. I want them to learn to pray and follow God's will for their lives, not what the government wants, not what I think they should do or be, not even their own heart. I want them to keep their eyes on God and then God will give them the desires of their heart because their heart will want what God wants.

If you read all my rambling, I thank you (and think you're a bit crazy, like me. LOL)

Looking forward to the weekend

Tomorrow we are headed to the Pioneer Farm in Eatonville. We are all excited to go. The kids have loved our at home pioneer days and we get to experience it better tomorrow. I'll have to post pics. (I discovered I put the cord to the camera in my mom's digital picture frame box when she brought it to me to upload new pics. I'll get it back next week.)

This weekend is also Women's Retreat for church. I am so looking forward to it!

Catch up

What a busy week. Here's a quick run down.

Monday--dentist appt. for Nate
Tuesday--morning Bible study with a visit to friends after
Wed.--Ellie, Alex's gymnastics and Nathan's baseball practice
Thurs.--Nathan and Alex had an orthodontist appt. Alex gets to have 4 baby teeth pulled.
Friday--teach science co-op and a Creative Memories party at Rachael's
Today--take scrapbooking swap to post office--14 packages to mail, planted flowers in the front (it needs a few more flowers and some bark but it's a start), tonight is Nate's baseball game

Somewhere in all that I had to prepare for the science class, get the kids and I started on an online class and prep for Sunday School. It was busy.

I would upload pictures but we can't find the cord to hook the camera to the computer. Very strange! I'm the person who does it 90% of the time and I always keep it in the den-either in the drawer where is belongs or right next to the computer.

The kids are learning about insects in science. Yesterday we made a habitat for a bug and an insect display case (you know, where they pin dead bugs to a foam board.) I'm making them keep them outside. They both came home from class asking for food to attract bugs so their habitats now have ants in them. I picked up a miniature ant farm at the Target dollar spot a week ago and the kids had fun getting ants to put in it.

Princesses, Cupcake Dresses, Church and a Toddler

Ellie was in true toddler form today. I think she sat in time out at least 5 times. It seems her favorite word today was no. Ah, such is life.

Alex and Ellie started the day dressed up in princess dresses while watching part of a princess movie while I took a shower. They wore the dresses all morning, until nap time, except for the photo session below.

Alex and Ellie both have pink dresses with cupcakes on them. I have this great scrapbook paper that is pink with cupcakes. So, of course, I asked Angel to pack Ellie's cupcake dress one day and today was the day. I took about 40 pictures and I think this is my favorite. They were both pretty cooperative but we took the pictures indoor and the house was a mess and I just made do.
Then Nathan and Alex got out their animals and played church.

Dinner Out

Oystein has been invited to a formal dinner/auction every year by a client from work. This is our third time attending (we didn't go last year) and it's nice to get dressed up and go out. I think my favorite part of going on a date with my husband is the time in the car. It seems no matter what we are doing, our best conversations are while we're driving.
We enjoyed the evening. The food and the company was good.

Baked Oatmeal and home delivery

I do not like oatmeal-but I love things with oatmeal in them-you know, like cookies. But I am always on the lookout for easy healthy things I can make for my family to help replace our junk food.

My friend, Diane, posted this wonderful baked oatmeal recipe on our homeschool board and it has became a regular favorite around here (for lunch, of course. I am not a morning person, remember. LOL) She gave me permission to share it. I tweaked it a little for my taste.

Baked Oatmeal

1 ½ C. oatmeal
1/3 C. honey (can use more or less)
2 TBS. brown sugar (opt.)
½ C. milk (rice or soy milk work too)
¼ C. oil
1 tsp. baking powder
¼ tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine all the ingredients and mix well. You can use less honey if you don’t like too much sweet and more if you want it sweeter. The brown sugar is optional.
Spread evenly into a square pan (8x8 or 9x9). Bake for 30-35 min. Serve. You can pour milk over it when you eat it or serve with fresh fruit on top. Another choice is to top with brown sugar.

Oystein and I have been working on eating healthier. We still have a long way to go (especially me) but progress is happening. We recently started receiving home deliveries from Klesick Farms. They deliver organic fruits and veggies to your home on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis. For now, we are getting deliveries every other week. It forces me to try new things since the boxes sometimes come with items I've never used. We've found out that Oystein and I like sunchokes (AKA Jerusalem artichokes) and last week I make a chicken and leek casserole that was liked by us adults too. We also just ordered their grass fed beef. I also like that we are working on supporting local businesses in this process.

Pay It Forward

Just thought I'd update that I have finally started on my Pay it Forward gifts. I'm so happy with what I've done so far and I wish I could post a picture of one of the items--the one I wish I could keep for me. But alas, until the recipients have received their items, I will just keep everyone guessing.

God's faithfullness

I am amazed at how God is so faithful. Yesterday, I found myself laying on my bed crying. I was tired and in a giving up mode. I felt like a failure. I cried out to God and told him that I couldn't do it anymore. I was tired of trying to be a better wife, mom and keeper at home. I was frustrated with all of my failures. I was giving up. I confessed my failures and sins. I think I even told God I was giving up for now.

I then went and read to the kids, as promised. The kids then watched Bolt, again as I promised them. I was giving up so I went on the computer. I didn't want to persevere in my housecleaning and helpmeet duties. I just wanted to forget about reality. So of course, God sent me to Bina's blog. He told me that he always perseveres for me. He will never give up on me. He is forever faithful. I allowed a few tears and a thankful prayer, got up and went to work on my closet. I cleaned and went to the Post Office and library as I needed to. My attitude was not perfect. I was still a little grumpy to my kids, but I got over it quickly.

I talked to Oystein when he came home and received his comfort. I left the house by myself to get some pictures printed and enjoy some quiet. I woke up this morning not feeling like giving up. I was ready for today.

Thank you, God for your faithfullness. Thank you that you are faithful, even when I am not.

2 Timothy 2:13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful (ESV)

Then this morning, I read Dawn's post for today. Again, God was talking to me. He was reminding me that it isn't about all that I do. It's about my relationship with Him!

Amazing!
